Baseball in the American Civil War ::
Date: Saturday June 16, 2012
Time: 2:00 PM
Location: Sports Legends Museum
Program is FREE with admission.
Despite the political and social grievances that resulted in the separation of the North and South during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865, both sides shared some common interests, one of which was playing baseball. Many soldiers who marched off to war had played the game at home and they took their bats and balls with them or fabricated the necessary implements in the field. Many times, soldiers would write of these games in letters home as they were much more pleasant to recall than the hardship of battle. The talk presented by vintage baseball living historian Richard D’Ambrisi will discuss these Civil War years and how baseball contributed to a significant part of many soldier’s recreational activity. On hand will be historical prints, photocopies of personal letters and pictures to help illustrate the story.

19th Century Baseball Post Season Play ::
Date: Saturday August 11, 2012
Time: 2:00 PM
LOCATION: Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum

The first modern World Series was played in 1903. However, many years earlier in the 1800s, being the champion baseball team was just as important. While not having a formal competition for most of the 19th Century, there still were many variations of year end play offs and post season matches held to determine champions and move the close of the baseball season further into the fall weather. The talk, presented by vintage baseball living historian Richard D’Ambrisi, will discuss 19th Century baseball post season play. On hand will be historical prints and pictures to help illustrate the story.
