Event Rescheduled for Friday, February 19

Baltimore, MD – The Babe Ruth Museum today announced that they are again postponing the “Babe’s Birthday Bash” event until Friday, February 19 because of the weather.

Celebration of Babe Ruth’s 115th Birthday will include honoring the Markakises with 2010 Babe Ruth Museum Community Service Award for their work with The Right Side Foundation

Baltimore, MD – The Babe Ruth Museum today announced that it will host its annual “Babe’s Birthday Bash” on Friday, February 5, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards. The event will celebrate the 115th anniversary of Ruth’s birth in Baltimore and take place one day prior to the slugger’s actual birthdate of February 6.

In addition to celebrating Ruth’s birthday, the Museum will present Baltimore Orioles’ outfielder Nick Markakis and his wife, Christina, with the 2010 Babe Ruth Museum Community Service Award. The award was created to honor Ruth’s memory by recognizing an active or former professional athlete, or individual with ties to the Maryland sports community, who has demonstrated a strong devotion to Baltimore and the State of Maryland by giving back to the community. Previous recipients include Edwin Mulitalo, Brian Roberts and Melvin Mora.

“Nick Markakis has become a staple of Baltimore baseball and we commend him and Christina for being so committed to serving our local community via their foundation,” said the Museum’s Executive Director Mike Gibbons. “Babe loved children and we know he would be proud of the Markakises work.”

In May 2009, Nick and Christina Markakis launched The Right Side Foundation (www.RightSideFoundation.org) as a way to utilize the platform they have through baseball to give back to the local community. The organization’s mission is to help improve the quality of life for distressed children throughout the State of Maryland. They achieve this objective through Foundation programming, investing in community groups/initiatives and developing strategic partnerships throughout the State. The Right Side Foundation’s key initiative is its “Fun for 21” program in which it provides 21 children from Maryland with day-long educational or recreational experiences at local cultural attractions, sporting events and more. Since the program’s inception in June 2009, organizations that have benefitted from the program include the Ronald McDonald House of Central Maryland, Living Classrooms Foundation, the Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital and others.

“Nick and I are extremely honored that the Museum saw us as worthy recipients of their community service award,” stated Christina Markakis, co-founder of The Right Side Foundation. “Forming the Foundation has been a rewarding experience and we are excited to keep growing our efforts in 2010 and helping more children in Maryland”
