SPORTS LEGENDS MUSEUM AT CAMDEN YARDS WELCOMES
FORMER BALTIMORE ORIOLE KEN SINGLETON
FOR PROGRAM ON MAY 9th
Baltimore, MD – Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards today announced that it will host a program with former Baltimore Oriole and current (YES Yankees Entertainment and Sports) Network analyst Ken Singleton on Saturday, May 9th at 1:00 p.m.
Singleton will discuss his playing days with the Orioles, while offering a unique perspective on the American League’s Eastern Division for 2009. Following the program, he will sign autographs for those in attendance. The program is free with paid admission to the Museum.
Singleton spent the majority of his 15-year Major League Baseball career with the Orioles, as both an outfielder and designated hitter. Acquired by the team in a trade with Montreal in 1974, he played ten seasons in Baltimore and helped the Orioles win two pennants, 1979 and 1983, and a World Championship in 1983. During his career, Singleton was selected to the American League All- Star Team in 1977, 1979 and 1981. He was named Most Valuable Oriole in 1975, 1977 and 1979, and his .438 on base percentage (in 1977), 118 walks (in 1975) and 35 switch-hit home runs (in 1979) are all still Orioles’ single season records. Singleton was inducted into the Orioles’ Hall of Fame in 1986, and was honored in 2004 as one of the club’s 50 All-Time Favorite Orioles.
Originally drafted by the New York Mets in 1967, Singleton began his major league career in 1970 before being traded to Montreal in 1972. He is one of only six players in Major League Baseball history to hit 35 or more switch-hit homers in a season. In 1982, Singleton received the Roberto Clemente Award from Major League Baseball, the highest off-the-field honor in baseball, as the player who best epitomized the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team.
Currently, Singleton is in his seventh season with the YES Network, serving as both color commentator and play-by-play announcer for New York Yankees’ games. The YES Network is a New York City regional cable TV channel dedicated to broadcasting baseball games of the New York Yankees, and basketball games of the New Jersey Nets.
Located adjacent to the main gate of Oriole Park, Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards consists of 22,000 square feet of artifacts and interactive exhibits profiling Maryland’s sports history, including an extensive gallery dedicated to the Baltimore Orioles that profiles the organization from the 1890’s to the current team.
